Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Which Nature's Bakery products are vegan-friendly?
A. Below is a list of our vegan products. Note that many of our products are excluded because they are made with honey. Honey-consuming vegans will have many more options than those listed below.
- Granolas: Maple Walnut, Apple Cinnamon, Trail Mix
- Veggie Burgers: Brazilliant, Tofu Walnut, Amazing Grain
Q. Which products are gluten-free?
A. While Nature's Bakery is unable to describe any of its products as "gluten-free" -- all of our items are prepared on the same equipment and in the same facility as our wheat foods - we do our best to keep different products apart, but we cannot guarantee that there are absolutely no traces of wheat or gluten in any particular product. Several of our granolas have barley malt, which also contains gluten.
We do have several products that have no wheat, barley or rye of any kind:
- Our Trail Mix, Cinnamon Apple and Peanut Butter granola.
- All of our vegan burgers: Tofu-Walnut, Brazilliant and Amazing Grain.
Q. Where does Nature's Bakery Coop source its ingredients from?
A. Nature's Bakery Cooperative is committed to purchasing our ingredients from small local distributors. This keeps our economic power circulating within our regional community, rather than siphoning it away to large corporations. We also use fresh, organically grown ingredients whenever possible. For example:
- Flours & Grains: Natural Way Mills, a certified organic grower in East Grand Forks, MN
- Honey: Mark Gilbert's Apiaries, in Darlington, WI
- Barley Malt Syrup: Briess Malt in Chilton, WI
- Maple Syrup: Kickapoo Gold, certified organic, from Westby, WI
- Miscellaneous ingredients: Valley Baker's Cooperative Association, a cooperative in Neenah, WI, & UNFI, a national natural foods distributor based in Iowa City, IA
Q. Why does Nature's Bakery use organic whole grains?
A. We use organic whole grains because we are committed to providing our customers with the healthiest baked goods possible. Organic whole grains are major sources of essential amino acids, complex carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. They also provide more fiber, B-vitamins, and other essential nutrients than "enriched" flours.
Organic whole grains are not only valuable for what they include, but even more for what they exclude. The grains we use contain none of the bleaches or chemical additives in processed grains. Our selection of grains is 100% organic; none contain harmful pesticides, herbicides or preservatives.
Many of our customers are directed by doctors to incorporate organic whole grains into their diets. Fiber has been shown to reduce the risk of some forms of cancer & heart disease.
We also use organic ingredients to support sustainable agriculture practices; conventional agriculture today is often heavy in pesticide and herbicide use, use of genetically modified crops, and fertilizer from antibiotic-treated livestock. These practices are linked with a host of human and ecosystem health issues that organic agriculture can counter and remedy. For more information, we suggest checking out the United Nation's worldwide assessment report on the value of sustainable agriculture, available here.
Q. Which sweeteners does Nature's Bakery use?
A. We use pure honey, barley malt, organic maple syrup, and blackstrap molasses in our granola. These sweeteners are all-natural and retain all of their natural nutritional benefits.
Because of our awareness of the variety of health problems associated with the over-consumption of sweeteners, we do not use refined white or brown sugars in any of our products. We also provide a selection of granola products that are fruit-sweetened.
Q. How long should I cook your burgers?
A. We recommend cooking any of our frozen vegan burgers for 15-20 minutes at 350°F. Alternately, to pan-fry, we suggest frying our burgers in a lightly oiled pan for 3-4 minutes per side on medium to medium high heat. All of our burgers are pre-baked.
Q. Where can I find nutritional information for your products?
A. On the product page for each: granola, vegan burgers, and calzones.
