FAQ

Q. What Nature's Bakery products are vegan-friendly?

A. Below is a list of our Vegan products.  Note that many of our products are excluded because they are made with honey.  Honey-consuming vegans will have many more options than those listed below.
  • Cookies: Maple Almond
  • Granolas: Maple Walnut, Apple Cinnamon, Fruesli, Trail Mix
  • Breads: Whole Wheat, Caraway Rye & Pita
  • Vegetarian Burgers: Brazilliant, Tofu Walnut, Amazing Grain
  • Vegan Spinach Teese Calzone
  • Irish Soda Bread (limited availability) Fruited and Savory
Q. What products are friendly to people with gluten- or wheat-allergies?

A. While Nature's does not specialize in wheat- or gluten-free dietary products, we do have a few offerings:
  • Wheat-free granola, all varieties
  • All of our home-made vegetarian burgers: Tofu-Walnut, Brazilliant (Brazil Nuts, Almonds, lots of veggies), and Amazing Grain (low fat & sodium comparatively).
  • Wheat-Free Flat Bread
Notice: Customers looking for these products should bear in mind that all of our items are prepared on the same equipment and in the same facility as our wheat breads and foods - we do our best to keep different products apart, but we cannot guarantee that there are absolutely no traces of wheat or gluten in any particular product.

Q. Where does Nature's Bakery get its ingredients?

A.  Nature's Bakery Cooperative is committed to purchasing our ingredients from small local distributors.  This keeps our economic power circulating within our regional community, rather than siphoning it away to large corporations. We also use fresh, organically grown ingredients whenever possible. For example:
  • Flours & Grains: Natural Way Mills, a certified organic grower in East Grand Forks, MN
  • Honey: Mark Gilberts Apiaries, in Darlington, WI
  • Barley Malt Syrup: Briess Malt in Chilton, WI
  • Maple Syrup: Kickapoo Gold, certified organic, from Westby, WI
  • Miscellaneous ingredients: Valley Baker's Cooperative Association, a cooperative in Neenah, WI, & UNFI, a distributor in Iowa City, IA
Q. Why does Nature's Bakery use organic whole grains?

A. We use organic whole grains because we are committed to providing our customers with the healthiest baked goods possible. Organic whole grains are major sources of essential amino acids, complex carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. They also provide more fiber, B-vitamins, and other essential nutrients than "enriched" flours.

Organic whole grains are not only valuable for what they include, but even more for what they exclude. The grains we use contain none of the bleaches or chemical additives in processed grains. Our selection of grains is 100% organic; none contain harmful pesticides, herbicides or preservatives.

Many of our customers are directed by doctors to incorporate organic whole grains into their diets. Fiber has been shown to reduce the risk of some forms of cancer & heart disease.

Q. What sweeteners does Nature's Bakery use?

A. We use pure honey, barley malt, organic maple syrup, and blackstrap molasses in our bread and granola. These sweeteners are all-natural and retain all of their natural nutritional benefits.

The same sweeteners are in our cookies, with the addition of turbinado sugar. Turbinado sugar is less refined than white or brown sugar, and processed without bleach or "boneblack" (a byproduct of commercial animal agriculture).

Because of our awareness of the variety of health problems associated with the over-consumption of sweeteners, we do not use refined white or brown sugars in any of our products. We also provide a limited selection of products that are fruit-sweetened or unsweetened, including breads and granola.

Q. When is your return bread available?

A.  We stock our return breads on Tuesday & Thursday afternoons from 1pm to 5:30.  These breads have come back from the stores and are between 3-4 days old.  As such, we sell all of our varieties of bread that have come back for $2.00.  At the end of the day on Tuesday and Thursday the leftovers are bagged up and donated.  Please stop by during these times to claim your return bread.  It is kept one stair landing above our storefront.
